Frequently Asked Questions

A cognitive ability test measures how well a person processes information, reasons logically, solves problems, and absorbs new knowledge. The test provides insight into a candidate's thinking and working level and is often used for selection, study advice and career development.

NOA's cognitive ability tests measure various cognitive skills such as:

  • Verbal reasoning
  • Numerical reasoning
  • Spatial awareness
  • Logical thinking
  • Numeracy
  • Speed and accuracy

The tests consist of eight (MCT-M and MCT-H) or six parts (MCT-A). These parts or subtests can also be administered separately.

  • MCT-A is an adaptive ability test that is suitable for all levels of education.
  • MCT-M has been developed for intermediate level (VMBO, MBO).
  • MCT-H has been developed for higher levels (HAVO, VWO, HBO and WO).

The choice depends on the target group and the purpose of the test.

In an adaptive cognitive ability test, the difficulty of the questions automatically adjusts to the level of the candidate. This creates an accurate estimate of the cognitive ability level with fewer questions.

Scientific research shows that cognitive ability tests are among the best predictors of study and work success. Therefore, they are widely used worldwide for selection and development.

Yes. In the development of its cognitive ability tests, NOA pays a lot of attention to diversity, language level and cultural differences. This makes the tests suitable for people from different backgrounds.

Yes. It is possible to complete practice exercises so that candidates become familiar with the questions and test environment. This gives them a better idea of what to expect during the test. On this page you can find practice exercises.

An IQ test or Intelligence test gives one score in which people are compared with the total (Dutch) population. The average score is 100.

In a cognitive ability test, different cognitive abilities are measured separately and compared with a certain norm group, for example people with an MBO education. This makes it possible to look at what are stronger or less stronger cognitive ability or skills that are important for a certain (educational) level.
