Proctoring - digital supervision

How can you reliably administer online tests without requiring candidates to come to a testing location? Proctoring makes it possible to administer NOA ability tests, knowledge tests and assessments under digital supervision. As a result, organizations combine the convenience of online testing with extra safeguards against fraud and unauthorized use of resources. Below we answer the most frequently asked questions about proctoring, digital supervision, privacy and the technical operation of the system.
Proctoring is the administration of a test or assessment under digital supervision. During the administration, recordings are made of the candidate's screen, the candidate himself and, depending on the chosen settings, the environment in which the candidate takes the test.
Proctoring helps organizations to make online test taking more reliable and to prevent fraud or unauthorized use of tools. At the same time, candidates can take the test at home or at another convenient location.
Depending on the settings chosen, the following data may be recorded, among others:
Yes. Proctoring makes it possible to take tests from home or another quiet location. As a result, a candidate does not have to travel to an assessment or test location.
During the collection, it is checked which programs, websites and tools are used. The identity of the candidate can also be established. In addition, assessors can assess afterwards whether there is evidence of unauthorized support during the test.
No. The recordings can be reviewed by experienced assessors who investigate whether there is evidence of improper behavior during the collection. The client then receives a report with the results of the monitoring.
During proctoring, personal data is processed, such as image and screen recordings. This data is processed in accordance with the GDPR guidelines and only authorized employees have access to the data.
Proctoring is often used for:
Proctoring usually requires a computer or laptop with a webcam, microphone and internet connection. Depending on the chosen device, a smartphone can also be used for additional control of the environment.
Yes. A system check is performed beforehand to check whether the computer, webcam, microphone and screen sharing are functioning correctly. This helps to avoid technical problems during the collection.
Support is available during the system check and test administration. In addition, the candidate can contact the contact person of the organization for which the test is being taken.
Temporary access to recordings can be granted upon request. As standard, clients receive a report with the monitoring results.
NOA offers the possibility to have candidates take tests at home under digital supervision. This is also called proctoring and is a so-called 'anti-cheating' measure.
The benefits of proctoring are great for both the candidate and the client.
Candidates no longer have to come to an assessment location and can take the tests at home in a quiet, familiar environment. Advantages for the client are: no more location and personnel costs for the organization of an assessment or test administration, a greater reach and a lower threshold to participate in a (selection) procedure. With a reliable result.
Proctoring means taking a test or assessment under digital supervision. This means that the candidate takes his or her test while recordings are made of the screen of the candidate, the candidate himself and their environment. This is an important way to prevent unauthorized use of AI or other unauthorized tools. It is useful, for example, for pre-employment testing, international or large-scale selection or admission procedures, but also for candidates who have difficulty getting to a central test location.

During a test, the candidate's screen is recorded, and the candidate is filmed by means of the webcam and microphone of the candidate's computer or laptop. Websites that the candidate visits during the test are also noted.
If the choice is made to use the camera on the candidate's phone, the candidate will be asked to film his or her surroundings to ensure that no one else is in the room. This option offers the best protection against fraud.
Experienced assessors look at the samples to assess whether fraud has been committed or not. NOA has standard instructions for these assessors Tailor-made instructions can also be given. The standard instructions cover the following questions:
Upon request, temporary access to your candidates' recordings can be granted.
As standard, you will receive a report from NOA with the monitoring results. These indicate for each candidate whether there is a suspicion of fraud or not.
During the administration of tests with the proctoring software, recordings are made of the candidate, his/her environment and his/her computer screen. During the setup of the proctoring software, a photo is also taken of the candidate and his/her proof of legitimacy (for more infomate see system check below). This data is stored at the supplier of the proctoring software (GDPR compliant). Only certain NOA employees and the assessors have access to this data. Agreements are made when the proctor images can be removed. This will be done as soon as the selection procedure and any appeals have been completed. Usually a period of 3 to 6 months is used.
The proctoring software only works in the free browser Google Chrome. The candidate's computer or laptop must be equipped with a microphone and a webcam.
If the camera on the candidate's phone is used, the candidate must first download the ProctorExam app. This is explained to the candidate before the test (see system check below). This app is only available for Android (version 4.1 and higher) and iOS (version 8.0 and higher).
