A new multicultural personality questionnaire: Big 6!

How do you find the best match? The right person in the right place? And the right work or training place for the right person? Many of NOA's customers are working on this on a daily basis and to support them we developed 'the new Multicultural Personality Big 6 (MP-B6). As always, based on scientific research, but also on new insights. In this way, we try to meet the wishes of our customers: a short and accessible instrument, but still reliable.

"'Thorough and solid is good, but it would be nice if it could be done a little faster'. That was a frequently heard feedback, both from our clients and from candidates," says Carin Bossink, psychologist and developer at NOA. "So we started working on that. But of course the results had to remain reliable and valid. Fortunately, new research has shown that it is possible to take a shorter measurement with even better results. In the form of a questionnaire with fewer scales that are measured more reliably."

In MP-B6, personality is still measured based on the classic Big 5 main scales plus the6th 'Integrity' scale, but there are now only 3 sub-scales per main scale with a total of 120 items instead of the previous 200. This shortens the collection time from about 25 to 10-15 minutes. And not only has the collection time changed, the questions and reports have also been adjusted. Where possible, the instructions have been shortened with concrete and simple language at A2/B1 level and more images have been used.

As always, this NOA instrument must also be user-friendly and fair for people with different migration backgrounds. This has been explicitly taken into account in the development of MP-B6. There are therefore no items and expressions in this new questionnaire that are culturally sensitive.

"A feedback point from customers was that lower scale scores had a rather negative interpretation and that can cause unnecessary resistance in the feedback to the candidate," says Carin. "So we have adjusted that. In the candidate report, we now mention the qualities and possible pitfalls for both low and high scores. It also helps that the report has become shorter, more readable and more visually attractive due to less text and more images. This gives a better insight into the personal characteristics of the candidate."

Furthermore, the expert report for this new questionnaire has also been adjusted. This gives an overview of both the raw and the stanine scores and what is new is that the cumulative percentages are also mentioned. These show how the score achieved compares to the scores achieved within the population.

The MP-B6 could be developed by analyzing data obtained from the existing personality questionnaire (MPT-BS) used for years by many NOA customers. In addition, new data was also collected through pilot studies. The research had three phases in which items were added, removed or rewritten. In this way, the right structure and content were built and eventually the result was created: a questionnaire that can be used generically and is reliable.

"Developing a new test always takes a lot of time and is accompanied by ups and downs," says Carin. "But once it is ready and functioning, it gives an enormous sense of satisfaction. We have created something that allows candidates to come into their own even better. I am especially pleased that the measurement has become more efficient and that the report makes it clearer that there is no right or wrong with personality traits. This can make it easier for candidates and clients to explore and understand together the meaning of these characteristics for the person and/or for work and study. This offers powerful tools for both selection and personal development."

A great added value of this MP-B6 is that there is also a working version available in which the insights provided by the questionnaire are also translated to the work situation. This will give you a good idea of what naturally suits the candidate in question well or less well in that specific context. "From there, a more targeted choice can be made for a certain type of work, so that someone comes into their own better and probably feels happier and more in the right place."
