Work integration of refugees

Our colleague Dan Asfar will defend his PhD dissertation entitled 'The psychological assessment of refugees in the context of work-related integration' on Thursday 11 May.

Prior to the PhD defence, Prof. Dr. Jaco Dagevos will give a lecture entitled 'The position acquisition of status holders in the Netherlands and what policy can learn from the experiences of Ukrainian refugees'.

Both address an important theme: which factors influence the finding of work by status holders and how can we accelerate this as a society. After all, labor shortages are great and are we not leaving a lot of potential of status holders untapped?

		The position acquisition of status holders in the Netherlands and what policy can learn from the experiences of Ukrainian refugees.
		In the first years of their stay, few status holders have a job. This is known as the refugee entry effect: factors specific to refugees dampen labour participation. Remarkably, Ukrainian refugees show a completely different pattern. It is plausible that differences in policy play a role here and that they can also be applied to the reception and integration policy of asylum seekers and status holders.

During his PhD, Dan Asfar conducted extensive analyses of NOA refugee data, with the aim of promoting the integration success of refugees in the Netherlands. In particular, he looked at individual differences such as work experience, educational background, personality and intelligence, as predictors of integration outcomes such as Dutch language skills and labour participation. In addition, he has developed an implicit test to improve the assessment of refugees. Click here for more information about the assessment.
