Proctoring - digital supervision

NOA offers the option of having candidates take tests at home under digital supervision. This is also called proctoring.

The benefits of proctoring are great for both the candidate and the client.

Candidates no longer have to come to a test location and can take the tests at home in a quiet, familiar environment. Benefits for the client are: no more location and personnel costs for organizing a test administration, a greater reach and a lower threshold for participating in a (selection) procedure.

What exactly is proctoring?

Proctoring means taking a test or assessment under digital supervision. This means that the candidate takes his or her test while recordings are made of the candidate's screen, the candidate themselves and their environment. This can be useful, for example, for international or large-scale selection or admission procedures, but also for candidates who have difficulty getting to a central test location.

What is monitored?

During a test, the candidate's screen is recorded, and the candidate is filmed using the webcam and microphone of the candidate's computer or laptop. Websites that the candidate visits during the test are also noted.

If you choose to use the camera on the candidate's phone, the candidate will be asked to film his or her surroundings to ensure that no one else is in the room. This option offers the best protection against fraud.

Who views and assesses the information?

Experienced assessors look at the collections to assess whether fraud has been committed or not. NOA has standard instructions for these assessors. Customized instructions can also be given. The standard instructions address the following questions:

Are candidates allowed to use the internet?
Are candidates allowed to use external applications?
Can candidates use books?
Are candidates allowed to use a calculator?
Can candidates use notepad paper?
Are candidates allowed to use additional resources?

Can we as a client access the data?

Temporary access to your candidates' recordings can be granted upon request.

As standard, you will receive a report from NOA with the monitoring results. These indicate for each candidate whether there is a suspicion of fraud or not.

Privacy

During tests with the proctoring software, recordings are made of the candidate, his/her environment and his/her computer screen. When setting up the proctoring software, a photo of the candidate and his/her identification card is also taken (for more information, see system check below). This data is stored at the supplier of the proctoring software (AVG/GDPR compliant). Only certain NOA employees and assessors have access to this data. Arrangements are made when the proctor images can be removed. This will happen as soon as the selection procedure and any appeals have been completed. Usually a period of 3 to 6 months is used.

Technical demands

The proctoring software only works in the free browser Google Chrome. The candidate's computer or laptop must be equipped with a microphone and a webcam.

If the camera on the candidate's phone is used, the candidate must first download the ProctorExam app. This will be explained to the candidate before the test (see system check below). This app is only available for Android (version 4.1 and higher) and iOS (version 8.0 and higher).
